KENYA CLIMBS TO THIRD ON LARGEST TOURISM ECONOMY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
WTTC ranked Kenya as third largest tourism economy in sub-saharan Africa.
According to report from World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), kenya has move to third just behind South Africa and Nigeria as the largest tourism economy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The growth just demonstrate how well the nation has progress over the last decade. In 2018, Travel and Tourism grew 5.6 percent to contribute Sh790 billion and 1.1 million jobs to the Kenyan economy. This growth is faster than the global average of 3.9% and the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 3.3%.
In addition, over two million international arrivals and international tourists spent over Sh 157 billion in Kenya last year. This accounted over 15% of total exports.
The largest inbound international market were USA (11 percent), UK (9 percent), India (6 percent), China (4 percent) and German (4 percent). Combined with domestic spending as of 2018, contribution of travel and tourism to GDP in Kenya was 8.8 percent. This was an increase from about 3.7 per cent in 2017.
Meanwhile private and institutional investor, conservation and regional development agencies, has ensured that the potential of the sector is prudently and sustainably managed.
WTTC President and CEO, Gloria Guevara said “Africa is one of the great success stories of global travel as the second fastest growing region in the world – and Kenya lies at the heart of the region, a popular and renowned destination that has seen huge growth in tourism activity and value over the past year.”
